The National Sports Festival 2006 (aka "Gate Way Games")came to an end on Thursday 20 April 2006 with the Final of the Football Tournament between Ogun State (host) and Osun State, both from the South West of Nigeria.
The closing session and ceremony was witnessed by the Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Ogun State Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Osun State Govenor Prince Loagunsoye Oyinlola. The match was played at the MKO International Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State and kicked of at 4.15 pm (local time).
The centre of the attention was Female FIFA referee Bola Abidoye.
The host of the football tournament Ogun State defeated Niger State 4-3 on penalties to reach the final while opponents Osun State defeated Edo State also on penalties after Edo State players walked off the pitch under protest, so the match had to be abandoned. Osun State were declared winners after the scandalous departure of EDO State.
The first half was dominated by both defence lines and no goals had been scored. In the second half, the Osun State team became better but despite taking the lead, it was the host team Ogun State that scored in the 60th minute from the penalty spot. A huge blunder of the Osun defence lead to the penalty and Ogun striker Malik Musibau converted from 11 m savely.
But Osun only needed 10 minutes to equalise. On 70th minute Osun State was rewarded a free kick just outside the penalty box and Osun´s central midfielder Afolabi Musi converted and earn his team a draw. After 90 minutes the scoreline was 1-1 which lead right away to a penalty shoot out which was won by Ogun State 5-4 (Ogun State sorers: Malik Musibau, Dapo Olufemi, Makama Sunday, Rabiu Ibrahim and Waheed Olapade; Osun State scorers: agwu Victor, Kareem Adebiyi, Abduwaheed Olapade and James Adesanya). The Gold medal in football of the Gate Way Games went to the hosts Ogun State and Silver to the Osun State team.
